A good non-scented hypoallergenic lotion to keep your hands soft and healthy when working is idea. There wont be any allergic reactions to these lotions. I recommend Lubriderm. It's not too thick nor runny and promotes skin healing (I even used it after I got my tattoo! It's awesome). They sell bottles small enough to keep in your pockets.
As for antiseptic hand rubs, there's a limit to those too. The best ones to use are alcohol free because they won't dry out your skin and cause cracks which will introduce infection. In the medical field they tell us you can use those if your hands aren't visibly soiled but only a maximum of three times before you have to wash your hands. You can also build up a tolerance to these also so don't always rely on hand sanitizer. I have actually met people who told me they don't wash their hands because they just use sanitizer (GROSS!!!). I mainly only use it if I sneeze and can't wash my hands right away, borrow pens or if I'm out and haven't gotten to a bathroom and I'm about to eat.
Remember when mom said you didn't take long enough to wash your hands? It's true!
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) updated Aseptic (germ free without disease producing microorganisms) hand washing to 20 seconds. Hand washing is very important because we use them all the time and they're the Mercedes for driving germs around. That's why you should try not to touch your face before washing your hands. Your eyes, nose and mouth are mucous membranes. Bacteria and viruses get in through there and the infection process begins. That's also why people should sneeze into the crook of their arm. If you can't readily wash your hands, the likelihood of someone touching that area is significantly less.
Adequate soap,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], friction and tepid water are the three most important things to good hand washing. If you can't time yourself, find a little song or poem you can sing in your head that lasts at least 20-30 seconds and then dry your hands. It only takes a few seconds and it should be done whenever you go to the bathroom, sneeze/cough, before preparing food or when your hands are visibly soiled. I know you all think "well this is common sense!" but trust me, common sense isn't all that common anymore.
Fingernails should be kept neatly trimmed and filed to prevent injuries. They should be short because germs live underneath but I know some ladies wont make the sacrifice. So when you're washing your hands, make sure you clean underneath your nails. You can get a nail brush for less than a dollar in the dollar store. Make sure you clean around your cuticle area as well. Dirty and other things get caught around that area of the skin.

I know it sounds like a lot to remember but once you do it often,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it becomes routine. When I learned proper hand washing in my first Nursing Assistant class,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], i started doing it like normal within 3 days. When I go out and people stare at me because I apparently "take too long to wash my hands", I end up explaining it to them and people tell me they didn't know these things. Nine out of ten times in the health care setting a contamination can be prevented by washing your hands. So if you go to the doctor and they don't wash your hands before touching you, tell them to. They may get annoyed but they should know better. Some doctors and nurses are old school so they don't often keep up with the new information that gets out there.
Did you guys know about proper hand washing technique? What are some other simple healthy tips you share with people?
