The timing for “Hello World” couldn’t be much better. It’s fall, people are beginning to pull inward a bit, and it’s a difficult social environment. The economy’s struggling, public rhetoric is harsh and polarizing and we’re bombarded by information. Sometimes you just want to pull a pillow over your head and scream. Or you simply zone out.
It’s a gorgeous song that builds dramatically, and the lyrics build almost cinematic images. It instantly feels like a deep piece, but a lot of fans have found it a little difficult ― the meaning isn’t clear on the first listen or two.
That is, in fact, what makes it such a great song. The title, “Hello World,” is a phrase that’s routinely used by computer students when they first learn to write programs. And that makes it extremely appropriate because it’s intended pretty much as an awakening.
“You get numb,” Hillary Scott observes. “You get to a point to where you’re just cold. You get desensitized, nothing really hits you and affects you anymore. I’ve been there, and you get to that point and I’m like, ‘Gosh, I don’t really like that about myself right now.’ But then it’ll be something, whether it’s the most beautiful sunset you’ve seen in months or this adorable little baby you see walkin’ around Target ― like there’s something that happens and that switch flips, and you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, the beauty in this world that was created for us.’”
“Hello World” is currently Top 30 on the national country charts and moving quickly. In the meantime, Lady Antebellum has a world of opportunities coming in the weeks ahead. They sing the National Anthem at the World Series in San Francisco on Thursday. They’re nominated for five Country Music Association Awards, including Entertainer of the Year, Nov. 10. They’re up for five trophies at the American Music Awards Nov. 22. And they have seven nominations ― tying them with Easton Corbin for the top of the list ― at the inaugural American Country Awards, which air Dec. 6 from Las Vegas.
The new Lady Antebellum single, “Hello World, football jerseys,” is one of the key tracks on the band’s Need You Now album.
“It’s this guy in traffic, he’s obviously havin’ a horrible day, looks over and sees this little girl and it kind of brightens his day, and he’s ‘Hello, world, good to see you again,’” Charles Kelley explains. “It’s these certain little moments ― whether it’s that or [when] he sees the church ― and it’s kind of his awakening, going, ‘You know, my life’s not all that bad.’ He walks in, sees his wife, his little girl, ‘Hello world.’ That’s what it’s all about, that’s why he’s in the grind, [but] we all get to that point in life where we’re caught up and overwhelmed.”
